What's a Mom to wear?

Some of the most FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) at September's Bride are about Mothers of the Bride & Groom and what their apparel should be on the big day. Today's Moms are chic and stylish; they want a gown that makes them feel like that on their son or daughter's wedding day. To help you, at September's Bride, we have two Mother's Gown Specialists; who have been-there-done-that and would love to help other Moms find the perfect ensemble to wear. Kristi and Margie are both available for appointments; just call us at 616-355-1433.

Let me also answer some questions that are frequently asked at our store:

Mom: As the mother, am I supposed to match the wedding party?
SB: No, but you should not clash with them, either. Wear a color that makes you feel pretty and confident.
Mom: Who chooses first, the bride's mother?
SB: Traditionally, the bride's mother chooses her dress first, and then informs the groom's mother of the color and formality of her gown; the groom's mother then chooses something complementary in color and length. Today, however, the lines are blurred with step-moms involved and couples who are from different parts of the country, and sometimes, world. It is still a good idea, however, to allow the bride's mother to set the standard.
Mom: Is black an appropriate color for me to wear?
SB: Yes, black is totally appropriate, especially for a formal, evening wedding. The key is to wear accessories that are more festive than somber. Metallic shoes and handbag would be a great thing to add. A sparkly brooch, chunky pearls, and chandelier earrings, perhaps. For an outdoor, summer wedding, black may look a little out of place, unless it is a black linen sundress. In this case, add a yellow or blush shawl, and you'll do great!

Eleven Days until "Bridal Season" begins! I'm going to give you an insider's secret...all bridal vendors are slower than usual during December, when everyone is Christmas shopping! But, in January things really pick up. If you're looking to shop at a slower pace and perhaps snag some deals, come in before the end of the month/year and see how we can help you!

Just a reminder, however; September's Bride will be closed on December 24, 25, & 31 and also on January 1, 2008. We will resume our normal hours on January 2, 2008.

I'm talking about "Size Ten"; which is nice if you are one, but more difficult if you're larger or smaller.

What am I talking about?

Most sample gowns in our store are size 10. I have ordered a larger variety of sizes for Spring 2008, but brides often wonder why everything is the same size at a bridal store.

The owners of a bridal salon have to purchase each gown that is brought in as a sample; they are not provided free by the designers. So, we try to get the best use of our investment by purchasing sizes that are the most flexible. We find that 50% percent of brides are within a size or two of a sample size 10, so that is often where the investment is put.

If you are frustrated because you are a big or little girl, please ask if we can get a sample in your size. Most designers have loaner programs and, at September's Bride, we will do all we can to find something in your size to try. We want you to be delighted with your shopping experience and with your choice of gown!

Six Weeks for Cleaning

Four Gorgeous Maid's Gowns
Three Flower Girl Dresses
Two Dedicated Consultants
and the Perfect Gown for your Bridal Debut!

I'm excited about sharing today's highlighted service with you because it is what introduced me to the bridal business.

Have you thought about what you'll be doing with your gown AFTER the wedding? Of course, right now the TTD trend is fun and popular, and may remain so - there are some great photos out there! Even after you've had the photos and worn the gown a time or two, there will probably be a time when you put it away and return to real life.

We put so much time and care into choosing a gown, then enjoy choosing accessories, having all of the alterations finished, carefully transporting it home and then keeping it safe until the BIG DAY. However, after the wedding, I've seen gowns that were attacked the family pet, because it had been left lying on the floor.

So, let me urge you to carefully consider having your gown preserved by our company, Great Lakes Wedding Gown Specialists.

As a member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists, I personally clean each gown and then it is carefully packaged in acid-free materials right at our store. Your gown is handled only by our staff, and you don't have to send it off to "who-knows-where"; keep it right here in West Michigan! And, yes, you CAN open the box, inspect your gown, and show it off safely.

For more information, feel free to visit in person or send me an e-mail. There is also a very good video at the Assocation of Wedding Gown Specialists' website.

Aren't they darling? Little girls, looking up at you with adoring eyes, dressed in their own fluffy party dresses? Most weddings have a flower girl or two, or three...

I had two little girls in my wedding. One was dressed as a "miniature bride", in a dress that mimicked my own, and one was dressed to match the bridesmaids, she was the traditional "flower girl", with a basket full of rose petals.

However you choose to outfit your little admirers, you'll find appropriate wear at September's Bride in the Us Angels line. Sizes from 18 months to 14 are available in so many wonderful choices.

Window Dressing

In our window right now is "Bianca", a beautiful silk organza gown with unbelievable ribbon embroidery. Bianca has a classic strapless neckline and an A-line skirt, with a chapel-length train. Here are a few ways I would suggest acessorizing this gown:

1. Classic. Pearl choker; fingertip-length veil with ribbon edge. Pearl drop earrings. Satin pumps.
2. Modern. Skip the necklace; wear gold bangles on your wrist. Gold hoop earrings. Short veil with gold pencil-edge. Gold sandals.
3. Trendy/Retro. Heirloom necklace. Cage veil with raw edge. Golden ballet slippers.

Come in and try on this fab gown for yourself!

Playing Tag in Blog-land

My wedding planner friend, Aletha, of Pearl's Events, "tagged" me. Which means that I get to list seven random things about myself and then "tag" more blogs. This being a business blog, I'm going to list random things about September's Bride, and than "tag" my personal blog, if you want to get to know me better personally!

1. The store officially opened on October 2, 2007
2. The store unofficially opened on September 29, 2007
3. We are located next to a great little yarn store, Lizzie Ann's Wool Co.
4. We are located across from JP's Coffee Shop - which means alot of our profits go into their cash registers!
5. We donate a portion of our sales to the Lakeshore Pregnancy Center.
6. There are 24 stair steps in the store.
7. Our postman's name is Don. He's the best!

OK, now I'm tagging Tami's Textiles & Notes; SewChic; Life of MEJK; and Amy Johnson.
If I tagged you, this is what you should do:

1. Put a link to my blog on your site.
2. List 7 random things about yourself
3. Tag more blogs (7 is recommended)
4. Leave the blogs you tag a comment that they've been "tagged"

Of backs & bustles

Last post, I wrote about beautiful backs on wedding gowns. Following that "train" of thought (pun intended), let's chat about bustles.

Often, when a bride finds a dress she likes in our boutique, one of her first questions will be, "How does it bustle?" Well, there isn't always a simple answer to that, as most dresses have several bustling options. Here are three popular ones explained: (Some styles go by several names, I am using the names we use at September's Bride)

1. Traditional. The lower part of the skirt and train are pulled up over top of the upper skirt and fastened with a series of hooks. This looks a little like a waterfall effect. This option works for most gowns and has remained popular for decades.

2. French. This bustle option has become popular in the last five years or so. In this version, the lower part of the skirt and the train are attached under the upper part of the skirt with hooks or ribbons and the skirt "bubbles" in the back. The look is somewhat similiar to a "pick-up skirt". This option is good for plain skirts and for those with a border. This is the most costly bustle, and will take the longest for your attendants to do. But, it can look FANTASTIC!

3. Ballgown. This option is good for small trains and slimmer A-line skirts. The entire train is folded up under the skirt so that it "disappears". This is a sophisticated option that is becoming more popular, but I have also seen it on vintage dresses, too.

Of course, each style above can be done in many ways, too. When you choose your dress, get an idea of the bustle you like. Look through magazines at different bustles. Typically, the bustle is not decided upon until your first or second fitting with the seamstress. She can be your biggest help in knowing what will work and look best on your particular gown. Also, it is helpful to bring your Mom, MOH, or personal attendant along to your final fitting so that your seamstress can show her how to bustle your gown properly.

The photo above is from Amy Carroll's blog. The maids are putting a French bustle into the bride's gown. If you want more information with lots of photos, check out this page; note that some of her bustle names are different than I mentioned, but the concept is the same!

Beautiful Back

The back of your gown should be as beautiful and interesting as the front. After all, most of your guests will see the back of your gown most of the time. Think about walking down the aisle, dancing at the reception, running to the car...

I think this gown from Casablanca has a beautiful back. When choosing a veil to go with a gown like this, think very long or very short. For an elegant and formal ceremony, a long veil the same length as the gown will add an ethereal quality. You can then remove the veil or change to a shorter one for the reception. If your wedding is less formal or if you are a petite bride. I think a veil that just grazes the shoulder would be spectacular with this gown.

Avoid choosing a veil that "hits" at the same point as an interesting detail on your dress.

On another note...stop in to see our new Dark Brown Tuxedo! It is great for the guys in your wedding.

Maids

Dressing your maids can be stressful. After all, you have to make five or six friends and female relatives happy in a color and style that you typically choose, and then ask them to pay! (Check out this post at Pearl's Events blog for more discussion)

At September's Bride, it's our goal to make everyone, from the bride, to the maids, to the Moms, happy with what they are wearing for the big day. Feeling beautiful and comfortable is important for everyone in the wedding party.

We have chosen to carry two wonderful lines of maid's gowns, Belsoie and B2, by Jasmine Bridal. (BTW, Belsoie also has some gowns that are fantastic for Mothers)

These lines are designed to fit and flatter many body styles. Many fabric choices and colors are available. And, of course, myself and our consultants will be happy to help you make appropriate choices to flatter your gown, your wedding style, and the season.

Just this morning, I received several new maid's gowns in at the store. If you haven't stopped in lately to check out our gowns for Maids & Moms, please do!

Just this week...

I have a beautiful Casablanca gown in the store - just for this week. If you would like to try on this beautiful and hard-to-find, popular gown, visit the store before Friday, November 30.

Made of a soft taffeta, this gown features a deep V-neck, with narrow shoulder straps, and a ruched bodice. The skirt is a slim A-line shape, with a chapel-length train. Diagonal clusters of crystals highlight the bodice and top of the skirt.

Veils

I love wedding veils. Once a bride has chosen a gown in our boutique, I have lots of fun showing her different veil choices to compliment the gown. And, of course, each bride's personality and fashion style plays into the choice, too.

This week, we received some gorgeous new veils from designer Jennifer Leigh. Jennifer knows veils and knows bridal trends. She has beautiful veils in her collection, and she will also custom-design a veil for you.

Another thing Jennifer does is heirloom work. For example, if you want to wear your Mom's veil, but you want it to work with your new gown, we can send the veil to Jennifer, confer with her, and you will receive Mom's veil re-designed for you. Don't worry, if they veil has yellowed, discolored, or stained over time, we can restore that for you, too!

I am posting a chart about veil lengths. (sorry it's not larger; but it falls apart at the bigger size) I encourage you to try several different lengths when choosing a veil. A different veil can make a gown look more or less formal. There are so many options! Have fun.

Delicious Decor

September's Bride is getting ready for Christmas! Over the past few days, two talented ladies have helped decorate for me. Deb of Decor by Deb has been helping decorate my windows since we opened, and she has re-themed them for winter. Deb does holiday home decorating. If you're interested in contacting her, please e-mail me and I will pass along her information.

The gorgeous Christmas tree in the store was decorated by Leslie of Belle Fleur.
Leslie is a very talented florist who is currently booking for Spring and Summer 2008 weddings! Be sure to check out her blog through the link above.

Now we are ready for this Saturday evening's BIG goings-on in Downtown Holland. This Saturday, from 6-9 pm, all of the Downtown merchants will leave their lights on for you and open their doors for the annual Downtown Holland Holiday Open House. Santa will be visiting, along with carolers, luminaries, roasted chestnuts, and lots of holiday cheer! Snacks and drinks are available at each store. (We're serving gourmet cheeses from Montello Meat Market and apple cider) Be sure to visit my friends Christina and Jodi at The Seasoned Home for a great holiday shopping and food experience; they are the best!

Hottest Veil Trend

Waterfall, Drop, Blusher, Mantilla; veil styles are definitely a way to personalize your bridal look. Back 16 years ago, when I was shopping for my wedding gown and veil, I thought that each dress had a veil that "went with" it; and you bought them as a set. Today's brides know that is definitely NOT true.

So, what do I see as the biggest trend for 2008/2009 in veils? Definitely the birdcage veil. It is a little retro, which makes it very modern. It's light and stays up off the shoulders; great for an outdoor wedding. For the destination wedding, what better way to say "I'm the bride"; but be comfortable and informal.

Try one on!

Vintage Collection

I love vintage clothing. About 2 years ago, I began collecting vintage wedding gowns. I have some of these gowns on display in September's Bride.

I enjoy looking at the design and workmanship of each gown. I touch the fabric reverently, wondering about the bride who first wore the gown and what direction her life has taken. What dreams did she have when she chose or made this garment?

Some gowns I find tucked in the back of antique stores. I take them home and carefully clean them before determining if I want to add the gown to my collection or resell it.

Sometimes someone will bring me a family gown that has been carefully stored. I love these because I get to know something about the original bride.

Stop in and see some of my collection!

Ahh, Jessica!

Let me introduce you to "Jessica", a new 2008 design for Lila Couture. I absolutely love this dress. It is so unique, yet very classic. The lustrous silk satin reflects the light so beautifully; can't you see this in the candlelight? "Tuxedo" pleats detail the front of the simple, body-hugging bodice. Both the top and bottom of the gown are bordered in a mesmerizing band of perfect accordion pleats.

Here are a few ways I would suggest accessorizing this dress:

1. Classic. A silk-ribbon-edged fingertip veil; single strand of pearls; and drop-pearl earrings.

2. Modern. Diamond (faux or real) choker; diamond studs; silk headband.

3. Trendy/Retro. Silver pearls (Tiffany & Co); matching earrings and a birdcage veil.

Jessica will be arriving at September's Bride soon!

Busy Day!

Today was a busy day at the store, full of brides, maids, and moms! Congrats to Kate Z; who decided on her dream dress today; and kudos to Melissa V; who found her dream dress, veil, and jewelry in the sale room!

Rachel and I both had so much fun helping brides try on dresses and veils. It was truly a day when I can say; "I'm so glad I have this shop!"

Just a "heads up" to all of you Spring/Summer '08 brides - you can beat the "rush" if you order your gown and your maids' dresses before mid-December.

See you in the store soon!

Newest Arrival

Yesterday, we received a few more new little girl dresses from US Angels.
We are adding some color to our collection, so besides classic white and ivory dresses with colored sashes, we have colored dresses that you can coordinate with your maid's gowns!

The dresses from US Angels are so well-made and exquisitely designed. They are truly one of America's top designers for flower girls and first communion events. These gowns are heirloom-quality and can easily be handed down from sister-to-sister; cousin-to-cousin, and generation-to-generation. Be sure to look at their beautiful website!

The dresses shown here are available in white, champagne (sampled in our store), pink, ivory, and red, to mention a few colors. The waistband is beaded with sewn-on (no glue!) beads in an elaborate pattern. Gorgeous!

September's Bride carries tuxedos, too! Black, charcoal, chocolate, and hard-to-find-navy! We also have the darlingest ring-bearer's tux, available with short pants! Coordinating ties and vests...what fun to match up with bridesmaids gowns.

I absolutely LOVE to help coordinate the entire wedding party's attire. I think I'm pretty good at it, too! Whether you want everyone to match, coordinate, or "blend", we have everything you need. Bring in swatches, photos, ideas, etc...and I will help you put it all together.

Here are some non-advertised specials just for my blog readers: 1. Purchase your bridal gown at September's Bride, and you'll receive 20% off your maid's gowns. 2. Ask nicely, and we'll give the groom his tuxedo FREE! 3. For each flower girl's dress you buy at September's Bride, I'll rent you a coordinating ring-bearer's tux for just $25!

Klompen at your wedding?

I discovered a delightful blog by a Canadian photographer, Alan Maudie. He has great pictures and a sense of humor. I think many of the wedding photos can inspire brides-to-be with beautiful ideas and sentiment. While perusing his blog, I found this photo that I found especially amusing, having grown up in Holland, Michigan and celebrating Tulip Time each May! I've never heard of a bride around here dancing in wooden shoes at her wedding, though.

I pledge allegiance...

I honestly don't know what to say, but I just had to post this pic! Sorry, this dress is not available at September's Bride.

Something Old, Something New...Something Different!

I am flattered that after people visit our store, they often remark that we are "so different" from other bridal salons. I want to be different, to be unique. I want each customer to feel special and each bride to feel creative, excited, and beautiful after trying on gowns at our boutique. If you haven't had a chance to stop in yet and experience September's Bride, I invite you to do so soon!

What makes us different?

1. The designers we carry. We are the only store in the Holland area that carries Casablanca and Maggie Sottero. We are the only store in Michigan that carries Lila Couture. Soon, we'll be adding Justin Alexander and Novissima to our unique store, too!

2. The store. Our store is beautiful! Of course, I can't really take the credit for the actual building, as that is the landlord's doing, but the 100-year-old building sure has character.

3. The experience. Each person who works at September's Bride is there for YOU, the customer. We love to make your shopping experience special. Whether you come during open shopping hours, or make an appointment, we will do all we can to make your time at our boutique special.

4. This blog. Because of the interaction between myself, my staff, and our readers, we can show you what we have and what we do and you can tell us what you like and don't like. Keep reading and commenting - that will help make our bridal store even better for YOU!

5. The location. We are located in beautiful, chic Downtown Holland. Before you shop by us, have a cup at a cozy coffee shop, and after choosing your gown, celebrate with dinner at a great bistro or restaurant. You can have a whole day of fun and shopping in Downtown Holland!

Hablamos Espanol

Un pocito! Pero, tenemos vestidos de novia muchos bonitos!

Actually, I am referring to the new line from Spain, Novissima. Gowns from this line will be appearing at September's Bride in December and we are so excited. In the same price point as our Lila Couture line, Novissima gowns are a little unique, but still traditional enough for our Midwest sensibilities. You will love these gowns!

Darling Flower Girls

When I was planning my wedding, I had just about as much fun choosing the flower girl's dresses as I did my own dress! All the miniature details are so cute!

Today, I received a fantastic FG dress in the store and it's ready to try on! This silk shantung dress in kiwi green with ivory alecon lace over the bodice - to die for! For other darling dresses available at September's Bride, visit US Angels.

Robin

Tonight, Bride Robin, her Mom, FMIL, FSIL, Aunt, and BF all came for an appointment. We had so much fun! Robin is gorgeous and looked so good in the gowns. After narrowing it down to two, she chose this very pretty Casablanca gown and a fingertip-length veil. Thanks, Robin and bunch for a fun evening.

Vintage is Modern

The modern look in wedding gowns definitely hearkens back to the glamorous days of lace and beads, layers of fabrics, and grandma's gown. But, unlike in grandma's day; today's designers are steering away from white and ivory as the only color choices. Shades of pink, from palest blush to cotton candy, are very popular. Also popular are silver, bronze, and gold. Even very traditional brides are choosing champagne and diamond white almost as often as traditional white.

If you're looking for lace, be sure to get "hands on" with several designer's lines. The best silks are soft and supple, not stiff and scratchy. Layering lace with tulle and satin are very popular for 2008. Bows, big and small, are everywhere, too!

New Line for September's Bride

At September's Bride, we want to offer our brides a unique selection of gowns that are not available at other bridal retailers in West Michigan. Today, I had the pleasure of discovering the Justin Alexander line! These are wonderful gowns with a couture look. You will enjoy the diversity of styles and the superb fabrics and construction of the gowns themselves. These gowns will begin arriving in our boutique in December. In the meantime, we have a catalog and you may also view their collection here.

A good time was had by all!

Thanks to each of you who attended the Open House celebrating our Grand Opening at September's Bride! I was delighted by the number of visitors and friends. We even had an impromptu photo session with Amy of Amy Carroll photography! My new cyberspace friend, Aletha of Pearl's Events and I were finally able to meet in person, too.

I have a few photos, but be sure to visit Amy's blog, as she took dozens and I am sure hers are much more beautiful and creative than mine!

In the next few days, I'll be sharing about the new veil designer I've discovered! I think you'll be delighted, too!

"Couture" - what's it really mean?

This post was originally published back in October. But, I have so many more readers now and lots of newly-engaged brides are shopping. I thought it would be a good "repeat". -Tami

The word "couture" is quite the buzz word in today's bridal industry. Perhaps you've been told by a saleslady, "This one's special, it's 'couture'"; or you've come across the word while looking at gowns on-line. It must be good, even if we don't completely understand, right?

"Couture" is a French word which means " the design and manufacture of fashionable clothes to a client's specific requirements and measurements"; up until the last few years, most of us Midwesterners would have said that something was "custom-made". If it had been custom-made of the finest fabrics, trims, and details available by your area's very best seamstress, it would have been, in fact, "couture".

Now, we are seeing almost every bridal line call their higher-end collections "couture". I'm sure you've noticed this, too. Instead of the original definition, "couture" means "high-end" or "more-expensive" in today's bridal market; at least to the end-consumer. I'm not sure manufacturers or bridal stores have done a great job explaining this to you, the bride.

All this to say, do we offer "couture" at September's Bride? You bet! See something you like in our sale room? Our talented seamstress and myself, with several years of re-making vintage gowns, will put our heads together and "couture" it for you! Did you know that Casablanca gowns can be customized for you, to your measurements and your preferences? And then, of course, we carry Lila Couture, which is truly couture in every since of the word, but still very affordable for us sensible Midwesterners!

Pretty in Pink; Lovely in Lace; need I say more?

This is one of my two favorite gowns that I saw at the Bridal Market this past weekend. It's from the Spring 2008 Lila Couture line and I'm the FIRST BRIDAL BOUTIQUE in the whole country to get this sample gown!!

We saw it on a hanger and thought it was great. When it got to the shop today, Rachel put it on and WOW!

I'm a traditional girl, but I just love this pink gown. It is crushed silk taffeta with aleceon lace and beading. The detachable train (not pictured) is so fun.

Want to see it in person? Try it on? It will be at our salon through our Open House next Thursday, then off to New York it goes. But...you can order one and make it your own!

We can see this with ivory maids gowns. We also put a darker shade of rose next too it and really liked the effect. For an evening wedding, you could even do black dresses on your maids. You would be THE STAR.

The doors are open!

Although the new signs are not up and the soon-to-be yellow front door is still mauve, inside the store we are in business! Rachel, Kristi, and myself, Tami, are just back from the National Bridal Market in Chicago and ready to have some bridal fun back at home.

Lila Couture is sending me six BRAND NEW 2008 gowns from the Spring Line for our Open House next Thursday, October 11 (7:00-8:30 pm). If you're looking for something different, Lila is your designer! You have to see these beautiful gowns to believe them; and you'll LOVE them!

Big trend for Spring 2008? Lots of tone-on-tone neutral colors - think blush accents on an ivory gown; champagne lace over ivory silk with an olive sash. Very lush and rich-looking. Also, lots of gowns in pale shades of gold & platinum. Silver, too. Match your gown to your engagement ring!

See you in the store, soon!
